Continue the revision of district curriculum studies and

Develop the K-8 language arts curriculum, with a goal of
having all children reading on or above grade level.
Continue the implementation of the Science 21 program, with
a goal of improving hands-on science instruction.
Continue the integration of technology into the curriculum
in order to better prepare students for the twenty-first century.
Develop a new five-year technology plan to ensure continued
long-term planning for the district's technology program.
Complete the Special Education self-review process by administering
the survey and reporting to the Board of Education in March.
The goal is to identify strengths and weaknesses of the Special
Education program.
Continue the development of a respectful and supportive community

Complete the investigation of using ground source heat pumps
to replace the heating and ventilation system at the Middle School.
The funding for this project will be through a performance contract.
The work on this project should begin in the summer of 1998.
Develop a bond proposal for presentation to the community
in the fall of 1997, with a goal of protecting the investment
this community has in its buildings.
Study all alternatives for educating our high school students.

The 1996-97 Board of Education Goals
Develop two maintenance plans - one to provide for the replacement
of the Middle School heating and ventilation system and the second
to cover other improvements needed in the District's buildings.
The latter plan should be put before the voters this school year,
with maintenance work starting during the summer of 1997.
Evaluate the effectiveness of the new grades K-4 and 5-8
school programs and report to the community at the January 1997
Board of Education meeting.
Conduct curriculum reviews, as follows, and report to the
community at the May 1997 Board of Education meeting.
Complete the implementation of the K-8 math curriculum.
Evaluate the alignment of our math, science and technology
program with the state's new framework.
Initiate a review of our K-8 language arts program.
Complete a curriculum handbook.
Examine our Special Education program through a self-review
process.
Develop a model for alternative assessment.
Work toward developing a respectful and supportive community
of learners.

of both schools. Continue staff training to assure the more integrated
use of technology in the classroom. Examine our program to see
where we are, how well we have accomplished our goals for the
year, and where we would like to be in the future.

in focus the needs of children and the taxpayers of the community.
Support our students' progress throughout their school experiences
and, specifically, monitor their progress at Walter Panas High
School. Work to increase communications with the staff and administration
of the high school. Continue to evaluate all alternatives for
educating our high school students.

The 1995-96 Board of Education Goals
Continue to review and revise the District's curriculum,
in accordance with the belief that all students should have the
opportunity to achieve mastery of the basic curriculum, by developing
curriculum maps in all areas including those of thinking skills
and the application of thinking skills; using curriculum maps
and other resources to continue the development of curriculum
standards in all instructional areas (with particular emphasis
on technology and such other areas as may be identified by the
District); reviewing the evaluation process to determine if it
needs to be revised to meet Putnam Valley curriculum standards;
and providing appropriate staff development at all steps of the
process.
Continue to support collaborative models for resource and
special class programs as a means of enhancing the education
of all children, while keeping disabled students in the least
restrictive setting.
Continue to strive to make our schools the center of the
community by investigating creative ideas for greater community
involvement within our schools and improved communication between
the school District and the community.
Continue to provide support for the transition of our District
into a K-4 Elementary School and a 5-8 Middle School and develop
a process to evaluate the effectiveness of our new design, with
appropriate recommendations for improvement where needed.
Continue to enhance communications between the Lakeland and
Putnam Valley School Districts, with particular emphasis on the
effective integration of Putnam Valley students into Walter Panas
High School and the careful monitoring and evaluating of the
progress of our students in Grades 9-12.
